SUCHOWATO
Packaging, Logo Design & Branding
To this day, the country of Japan is a place that has always fascinated me, inspired me and is somewhere I think we can all admire in many walks of life. I am also someone who is not afraid to admit to my love of chocolate… so I thought it would be a great idea to blend the idea and see what I could come up with!
In the creation of luxury chocolate packaging inspired by the profound cultural heritage and aesthetic principles of Japan, I embarked on a journey that melded tradition with innovation, embodying the spirit of Japanese minimalism, elegance, and attention to detail. My design process began with an immersive exploration into the rich tapestry of Japanese art and design, drawing from elements such as the serene beauty of the mountains, the subtle elegance of the clouds, and the iconic imagery of the sun, featured on their flag.
The packaging design incorporated minimalist aesthetics, focusing on a clean aesthetic and a harmonious layout that invites calm and contemplation. Every element was thoughtfully considered to ensure that the unboxing experience conveyed a sense of occasion, akin to the Japanese tea ceremony, where every action and object is meaningful and intentional.
The typography blends the SUCHOWATO brand with a clean finesse, along with the the Japanese lettering behind it to bring together the luxury look and feel I wanted to achieve. To have that luxury presence, I felt that less is more, and that’s why the colours are used sparingly in order to reach the sense that this chocolate would be the finest on the market. I wanted to reflect the culture's emphasis on respect and the celebration of individualism in their daily lives, which is why I created three separate designs for each flavour.
What I set out to do with this project is challenge myself to create something with a bit more style than what I would typically design. Seeing this brand come together and placed onto chocolate bars is when I knew my goal had been accomplished, and to show the rich grandeur of Japanese chocolate.
